Teacher only day - Local History: Tūrangawaewae

St Joe’s Roadshow - Tūrangawaewae

Our teacher only day reflected a fantastic practical way to learn more about our local history. I loved the rich information from our own people, including Ursula explaining our connections to our Parish and the history that is of significance to our Catholic Character. What was also enriching was the experience I had building relationships with my new team through our roadshow activities. I enjoyed the way that we learnt about each other along the way as we found pieces of our Pukekohe history on our journey. Having our local kuia korero with us about their experiences growing up in Pukekohe, brought a strong sense of responsibility, in the sense that it is so important to continue the learning journey for myself as a kaiako, teacher in this community.

Next Steps for my own journey:

-Reflect on my own experiences of growing up in the Franklin Area. How do these experiences shape the way that I teach?

-Read "No Maori Allowed" to continue to build knowledge of the history in Pukekohe

-Continue to learn and ask questions about the important buildings or history of our local Catholic Church and the significance of buildings to our school.
